For the last several days, I’ve been watching this guy at the gym. Not in a weird way—but let’s just say he’s hard to miss. He wears the same bold, black-and-white checkered pants every day (think MC Hammer vibes), and he never stops moving. While most people sit and scroll between sets, this guy goes straight into mobility and flexibility exercises before jumping back into lifting.

I found myself wondering—What’s his deal? A wrestler? A dancer? A curler?! He was so disciplined, so purposeful, that I finally decided to just ask him. Turns out… he’s training for nothing. He just loves bodybuilding, but after years of wrestling, he prioritizes mobility to stay injury-free.
And you know what? He told me he’d been watching me too—said he admired how hard I hit the gym every morning.
That conversation changed my approach. Now, instead of wasting time scrolling between sets, I do mobility work too.
So what does this have to do with agility?
How often do you watch someone at a trial and wonder, How do they get those start lines? How is their dog so engaged? Why do they do that warm-up? And then… do nothing?
What if, instead of guessing or making up a story in your head, you just asked?
Some of the best agility handlers out there are more approachable than you think. A simple, “Hey, I’ve noticed you do XYZ before a run—what’s the reason behind that?” could lead to a great conversation. It might even change your own approach.
So here’s your challenge: The next time you’re at a trial and find yourself admiring someone’s handling, warm-up, or routine—ask them about it.
You never know what you might learn—or who might be watching and inspired by you.
