  • Please, please, ask a question!, ...Sometimes I look out at the group and get the feeling that they're all looking at me, afraid to ask a question, and meanwhile, I'm looking at them, afraid there won't be anybody willing to ask a question...but then somebody asks a question and I breathe a sigh of relief., 3
  • Cherish Your Doubts, I just finished teaching two days for the Dog Training Club of Champaign Urbana, in Illinois. What a great group of people, and a great club. Just a really nice bunch. Of course, I must sound pretty Pollyanna; I have yet to have an experience teaching where I don't come away feeling that my faith in the human race has been restored, or at least replenished somewhat., 10
  • Adventure Illinois Style, A cancelled flight leads to a bit of adventure with a couple of new friends, and Daisy needs to find somebody who can make some uniform alterations., 1
  • It's Here! My First E-Book!, This E-book is the result of me spending countless hours and much effort going through sport psychology resources to find information I could apply to agility. I wanted to write a book that was practical as well as sports specific for agility handlers., 0

  • A Fresh Perspective, Hard to believe little Juno will be at her first trial this upcoming weekend! I am so excited to play with her. She's been a bit of a late bloomer, which suits me just fine, since she's been on the back burner most of the time anyway, what with my focus on Jester and Solar, and my crazy travel schedule. But, all of a sudden, in the past couple of weeks, she's blossomed. , 5
  • Moving Forward, I love teaching, but teaching anything, whether it be chemistry or dog training or what have you, can be draining. Really giving of yourself requires energy, and making sure you don't run out of that energy for the sake of your students as well as for yourself, is important., 2
  • Rest, Relaxation, Restoration, The cycle of transition and relaxation/rest HAS to be gone through. For the past week I've purposefully neglected answering all but the most important emails, have purposefully forgotten to take my iPhone with me everywhere, have dragged my feet on some other business tasks, and have not blogged or done much FB posting. A friend called Saturday to ask if I was still alive. , 1

  • Not just fun..., Mountain lion fun. That's how I felt after my Standard run with Solar on Sunday. That same feeling of superawareness, where everything is going really slow but really fast at the same time. It was great.... Juno was fun, too, but a different kind of fun. Kind of like how doing chemistry problems was fun, but gave me a headache at the same time. I think that's how it was for her, too. , 5
  • Time for Juno to learn DOWN, I didn't have a camera on me today, and even if I did, I wouldn't need it to have the image of today's hike burned in my brain. Today I headed out to the hills for a hike with the dogs, which I try to do at least three times a week, and I decided I'd try out a new area. , 5
  • Is it real?, Wow, I think I'm still in shock. I know that many of you are probably thinking that based on so many recent successes, I expected to win a spot, or expected to be picked for a spot on the AKC USA World Team this year, but I honestly did not. In fact, I think it's safe to say that I've never worked harder in preparation for a big event than I did for this event....EVER, 11
  • Juno's Big Debut, Juno had her big Novice Debut this weekend! She's almost certainly had the least preparation and training of any of my dogs to date, given my busy travel schedule and focus on Solar and Jester, but nevertheless, she did great. I've been waiting for her debut for some time, not only because running a Novice dog is a ton of fun, but to prove to people that you don't have to step in to the ring perfect, or perfectly prepared. , 12

  • Team Practice, Thoughts On Volunteerism, Back in March, when I was in the UK for Crufts, I went out to dinner with several Brits who were there to compete and/or judge, and we had a really enlightening conversation about some of the differences between USA agility, UK agility, and European agility. Turns out they're a bit different, all three of them, although I'd lumped the UK in with European agility previously. In any case, I was interested in an event they hold every year, called the International Agility Festival. **EIGHTEEN RINGS** of agility. Can you imagine? Their local trials are almost always **SIX RINGS** of agility. It's mind boggling. , 20
  • Ten Thousand Hours, One Million Mistakes, There were a lot of great handlers and dogs at the KY seminar this weekend (including a Jester daughter and a Juno litter sister!). In addition to agility handling we talked about goal setting and mental management - have you spent your 10,000 hours...have you made your million mistakes?, 7
  • Birthdays, Fundraising, Juno, and Perfection, "If you want to know the truth... I don't really care about the stats. Or the cup, or the trophy, or anything like that. Um, in fact, even the games aren't that important to me, not really. What matters to me is the perfect throw... making the perfect catch... the perfect stepping block. Perfection is what it's about. It's about those moments when... you can feel the perfection of creation. The beauty of physics, the wonder of mathematics. And all the relation of action and reaction. And that is the kind of perfection I want to be connected to.", 0
  • Catching Up, Slowing Down, I've been neglecting my blog lately, but I have good reasons, I swear. First, I headed to Australia last week for less than a week - that's a lot of flying! From May 25th to June 1st I was either coming, going, or teaching in Perth, Australia. As usual, it was an amazing experience. The people were wonderful, the dogs were wonderful, the weather was wonderful., 0

  • For The Love Of A Dog, Tuesday morning I laid in my bed, at Anna’s house in Germany, thinking how strange it was that I was there, with Solar, for an agility competition. Should I feel guilty for dragging my dog all over the planet to do agility? I do, a little, but I also know that Solar would, 2
  • Big Fish, Little Pond, On Saturday, instead of packing for my trip to Germany, I spent the day finishing up the swimming pool project I started Friday. Jester, Solar, and Juno all love to swim, and with my time being somewhat tight these days, I figured that the gas money and time spent driving almost an hour each way to water on a regular basis could be better spent on a pool I could have right in my back yard., 0
  • Ending of an Era, Back in 2001, I went to my first USDAA Nationals with Fly. It was my first National event ever, and it was in Del Mar, California, an easy flight for a first timer. It was in September, just after 9/11/2001, so there was some question about whether or not I'd even be able to get ON a plane and fly there. But, fly there I did, with Fly, and Tammy, and Blaze., 1
  • The church of self improvement, Now, don't get me wrong, I'm really not one of those people with shelves full of books on self-improvement or anything like that, but really, we all find our own ways of growing as we live, our own ways of 'becoming', and isn't agility just another one of those ways?, 0

  • Running Contacts, cont'd, The running contacts don't get much airtime on my blog, even though they are still one of the most fun parts of my training with my dogs (Solar and Juno). I shouldn't say that just the running contacts are fun, to be honest, just doing the DOGWALK is fun. I have no idea why I'm so in love with that obstacle, that ONE obstacle, but it's just so darned much fun, even doing the 2O/2O with Jester., 1
  • The year in review, I *love* teaching. To be honest, sometimes I wish I didn't love it so much - being a teacher, teaching ANY subject, is not a profession that is going to make me a millionaire. It's not a scaleable enterprise, because as a teacher, I've only got so many hours in the day, and anybody who is a teacher knows that to do it well takes more than just prep time and teaching time. It's an emotional investment, and a day of teaching often leaves me feeling drained and empty, but dammit, I do love it., 2
  • EO Photos, GHKC Videos, I got some more photos from the European Open - these are courtesy of Maja Rokavec, another fabulous European photographer. Again, if you're viewing on LJ you'll have to view the slideshow on my website directly., 1
  • EO 2011 Images, I've long enjoyed looking at photos taken by European Photographers; they seem to tend to include the handlers in the photos, which is NOT the tendency here in the USA. It's a team sport, after all, I want to see the whole team, for better or for worse!, 6
  • European Open 2011 Recap, I wrote this on my flight home from Germany – on my flight over I had wifi access, and I was hoping for the same on the return trip, but, no such luck. The European Open 2011 was amazing. I’m so glad I went, and I’m so glad I camped on site; that was definitely the way to go for the sake of the whole experience. After all, how often do you get to step out of your tent and see this:, 0

  • Lilliputian en Paris, And to think, escargot was the scariest of the two things on my list to try, tartare de boeuf being the other. Maybe I'll stick to escargot. , 1
  • Chartre, This church was amazing. The scale of the thing was just insane. We went to a lot of churches last year, but this one tops them all, for sure., 0
  • Update from France, The weather is gorgeous! Yesterday we walked around Chambord, another Chateaux, until I couldn't walk any more. My legs were jelly, probably from the flight, the morning jog, and then what seemed like miles of walking around this huge place that was just a "hunting lodge". Crazy., 0

  • The Final Countdown, and Online Classes, Well, I leave for France in just a few short days. I'm armed to the teeth with technology so that I can stay in touch with my online classes. I must say, I'm totally stoked about them. Not only does the format appeal to the nerd in me (there's not much of me that ISN'T a nerd, frankly), but I get to develop working relationships with people I might otherwise never get to work with., 0

  • A Multitude of Moving Parts, Lots of moving parts, but really, I guess that's nothing new. And, now that I'm feeling less exhausted by the events of September and early October, and my head is above water again, I'm finding that I'm taking pleasure in all those moving parts; I'm not sure I'd have it any other way., 4

  • Inches from brilliance, So, every run, within INCHES of brilliance. On the one hand, I'm obviously disappointed about the results, since they sure don't look great on paper. But really, it's hard to be too upset about the errors that occurred, hard to be upset over INCHES., 7
  • 2011 World Championships (and catch-up), Toward the end of the Opening Ceremonies this morning, I got a big grin on my face, because I realized, I'm HERE! I'm really HERE!! And holy schmoly, I've been here before! I hope I am lucky enough to be here AGAIN! World Championships is just about the coolest place to be, ever, hands down. By the end of the day, as the team left for the hotel, even though..., 5

  • Thankful, This past year, as my world has shrunk, due to my extensive travels, I'm even MORE thankful for all of YOU who have brought me in to your area to learn from me. Truly, the bread that is on my table each night is a direct result of you partaking in the information I have to offer., 0
  • Project Juno Continues, Yes, that little speck out there is naughty little Juno, rounding up some sheep all on her own. Well, she wasn't really naughty, except for the fact that she was supposed to be with ME and not off gathering those sheep, which she actually did quite nicely. , 0
  • Branching Out, I've been so busy putting forth creatively lately that I feel like my brain is all wrung out - but at the same time I feel feverish, like there's MORE. More to say, more to write, more to learn....ack!, 1

  • 2011: The Year My Hair Curled, I'm so far off the beaten path that there IS no path, except that which I create for myself. I can look back and see the path I've made, but looking forward? It's mostly wilderness - frightening, lonely, beautiful, amazing wilderness., 2

  • Latin Dance FAIL, There is officially NO latin blood in my veins, which is a darned shame. I could use some of those hip moves on course, I'm sure of it. Read on for a tale of fitness club fail, and why singing should remain in my vehicle at all times., 7
  • Break Time is Almost Over..., , 0
  • Doing Things YOUR Way, MY Way, I'm posting right now as a means of taking a break from my task du jour: getting all my equipment ready to take to a barn where at long last, I'll be teaching a couple of classes again. MY way. MY equipment. MY students. How liberating! The only downside is that since I *have* sort of started to recognize my limits in terms of personal bandwidth, I will be teaching fewer classes than there are students lined up to take them. But, I've come to grips with that, and all I can do is hope that people won't jump to the conclusion that I'm "playing favorites". , 5
  • The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, I'm looking forward to my 2012 trips - I do love the travel, even though it takes a lot of energy. I love meeting new people and reconnecting with students I've worked with previously, and I do think it's much more cost effective for me to go to them than the other way around. This year I'm already planning a couple of International trips - if you've made it this far in my post, I'll..., 0

  • Bang For Your Buck And Scalability, Personally, as a seminar presenter, I'd prefer as much as possible to not have to force seminar hosts or potential participants to be faced with the choice of deciding if they're charging or paying too much. But, that's a pretty idealistic view. Still, I know I'm happier sleeping on somebody's couch if I know I'm saving everybody a few bucks; it works out in the long run for everybody., 11

The process is the thing., 2
